I’m a massive advocate of slow living and slow decorating - allowing your home to evolve over time and become the essence of the souls who dwell there, with beautiful and meaningful items collected over a lifetime. Of course, if you’re just starting out, renting or moving house and wanting to create a new look, then LAYERING is your secret weapon. For a home to feel lived in, it’s all about triggering the happy collision of the senses by combining styles, textiles, pattern and print, colour and texture for visual depth and tactile comfort. The more you layer, the more cohesive and calm a space feels.

Let’s talk BRUTALISM. An evolution from the modernist movement, you might automatically think exposed concrete, hard angles, stark and cubistically minimal spaces like the iconic Barbican Centre in London, The Geisel Library in California or Boston City Hall. Not perhaps the architectural aesthetic that immediately makes you feel ‘homely’. But there’s a softer manifestation to brutalist design that’s been emerging in interiors, which embraces tactile textures, chunky silhouettes, mid century art, an abundance of green plants and colour to create a style that feels more playful, warm and welcoming. It’s all about the contrast, and I LOVE it!

While I love to rip up the rule book when designing a space, I totally believe in the power of repetition and symmetry to create a beautiful visual rhythm. Just like a chorus, melody or beat that’s repeated in your favourite track, this rhythm of repeat makes a room and your experience of it harmonious and memorable.
