#7 JULY: THE ART OF LAYERING

The art of layering by @jambk_

I’m a massive advocate of slow living and slow decorating - allowing your home to evolve over time and become the essence of the souls who dwell there, with beautiful and meaningful items collected over a lifetime. Of course, if you’re just starting out, renting or moving house and wanting to create a new look, then LAYERING is your secret weapon.

For a home to feel lived in, it’s all about triggering the happy collision of the senses by combining styles, textiles, pattern and print, colour and texture for visual depth and tactile comfort.

The more you layer, the more cohesive and calm a space feels. This artful fusion isn’t about being a maximalist or minimalist - or indeed about cluttering or decluttering a space. This is embracing the art of layering to achieve a multidimensional ‘lived in’ feeling that’s true to you.

So start with something you love - just like you would when getting dressed. The ‘base’ of your layered room could be a statement piece of art, heirloom vintage furniture, or a patterned upholstery fabric, for example. Build your design around this. My drop this month features some stand out vintage and contemporary art and accessories which could either start or punctuate your layering journey; or browse around the full vintage collection for inspiration.

Consider all architectural and decorative elements - your flooring design, window and door treatments, wall coverings, lighting, furniture, accessories - and plants. And have fun with it. Play with scale and diversity. Go hard on contrast for greater impact and experiment with different combinations until you find your calm.

If you’d like my help to take you to another dimension, then let’s get to it. You can call or email me to set up either a face to face or video meet up to envision your artfully layered home.

With love,

Kim
